P-04 Final Project, Surreal: Medusa’s Lament

This one was created completely in Photoshop. I wanted to go for something dream-like… and thought how about a sufficiently creepy nightmare instead. I actually thought I was done with it yesterday, but decided to torture myself and work on it for about 9 hours more! Haha. I am including some progress pics I took, so you can see it in different stages of completion. She originally was going to have no eyes, but my friend L. insisted I add eyes and finish it some more… and I’m glad I did. Thank you for kicking me in the rear L. :P This is probably my single best Photoshop work ever I think. This is quickly becoming my favorite medium. I was lazy on the snake scales and used a stock photo of up close western diamondback rattlesnake skin. ;p I can’t very well get a up close photo of a rattle snake myself and you try drawing perfectly uniform little scales… yeah I really don’t think so!! So I basically used the image as a pattern to create a basis for the scales, I used the paint daubs filter and a blur and then went in and refined each scale to bring it out with some light and shadows. I used my own eyes from a photo as a basis for her eyes.

I’m not sure what gave me the idea for cobwebs in her mouth except it sounds really creepy and eww to me… and personally I am actually majorly arachnophobic. It was actually really hard to look at photos of spiders to draw that… totally serious…haha. I’ve never seen a Medusa with rattlesnakes and since I dwell in Texas (land of the creepy crawlies)… I naturally thought of rattlesnakes first. This piece is very personal to me as well. I tried to think of what it must be like to be Medusa. It must suck being her… turning anyone to stone who looks her way – hence the title “Medusa’s Lament”.  In a round about way I can relate to her, so it sort of turned into a really freaky surreal/fantasy self portrait kind of thing! I almost wish this had been my “Non-Traditional Self Portrait” instead of the other I did for that! But I guess it’s a fitting final project. I am very happy with how this turned out.

P-04 Final Project, Characters: Stubbies

Well I wanted to come up with something simple and cute. I was on a major time crunch with all my other classes so I couldn’t spend a whole lot of time on every one of these. It’s very simple but turned out super cute. I originally was going to do a Vampire Rabbit along with the Pi-RAT, Ninja Coon, and Fairy Cat…  but my bunny Barley told me that rabbits should be super heros. >.> So Super Bunny it was! I created this in Illustrator. I sketched them out in Illustrator and then inked and filled using the Pen tool more or less.

P-04 Final Project, Hand-Drawn Type: Redheads Font

I created this in Adobe Illustrator using my wacom tablet stylus to draw the letters. Not much else to say about that, because it’s basically my own handwriting with some curly-cues. The background was created using various textures, lighting effects, and filters in Photoshop. I gave it a sort of auburn color to go with the redhead theme. The quote is by Mark Twain: “While the rest of the species is descended from apes, redheads are descended from cats.”. It’s my favorite quote of all time, and obviously appropriate to myself… being a redhead named Kat who likes cats.  Mark Twain was obviously a brilliant man!
